Joining the orchestra
When do you rehearse and perform?
The Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra performs four concerts in the Melbourne area each year. We rehearse regularly on Saturdays from 9:30am (arrive 9:15am) until 12:30pm at St Michael’s Church, North Carlton (venue map).
Who can join?
The orchestra is open to anybody between 18 and 30 years old (or thereabouts!). New players are welcome all year round. Player subscription fees are $40 per concert season – usually payable by the third rehearsal – with a discount if you commit to the full year.
We are always on the lookout for new strings players in particular: so if you play a string instrument and would like to join, we would love to hear from you! Demand for players in other sections depends on the repertoire. Auditions are not required, but a minimum standard of AMEB Grade 6 or equivalent is recommended.
What kind of music do you play?
We perform varied and challenging works from across the orchestral repertoire, and collaborate regularly with instrumental and vocal soloists and choir. Information about our current concert seasons can be found on our concerts page.
Concerts in the previous two years have included major works like Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Dvorak’s Symphonies Nos. 8 and 9, Elgar’s Cello Concerto, John Williams’ Five Sacred Trees and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony.
How do I join?
