Invitation to Audition

String Positions

All new string players are required to audition to be part of the orchestra. The audition process allows us to get to know each player better and find the best place for you in your section where you will learn, succeed and thrive.

Woodwind, Brass & Percussion Positions

All positions are open and will be allocated based on performance at the audition. Position allocations will be effective for the entire year, except where a first chair player becomes unavailable or wishes to negotiate rotations with the conductor during a taxing program.

Each person will undertake a brief  audition with Ingrid Martin (Music Director) and Teresa Wilkie (Concertmaster). During the audition you will present three (3) orchestral excerpts from music in the 2017 season. Woodwind, Brass & Percussion players prepare set excerpts. String players are able to select excerpts from a number of options – see the strings document for further details. The excerpts have been selected for you to demonstrate both your expressiveness and technique. You should be prepared to play the excerpts in their entirety.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do you rehearse and perform?

The orchestra rehearses on Saturdays from 9:30am (arrive 9:15am) until 12:30pm at Carlton Scouts.

We aim to avoid clashes with university exams and holiday periods. Rehearsals start in February and finish in December. We perform four concerts in the Melbourne area each year.

Who can join?

Our orchestra comprises players aged 18 – 35. Our members include students in music and non-music courses, amateurs, and aspiring professionals.

We recommend a minimum playing standard of AMEB Grade 7 or equivalent.

How much does it cost to join?

The VYSO is a fully independent orchestra, so we ask our players to pay a small membership fee to help us meet our costs. The rate is $50 per concert and is due by the third rehearsal of the concert.
